Becoming Writers, Scientists, Readers and Mathematicians!

We began science this week by analyzing the question, What is Science?  Students made observations of the classroom and the outdoors.

We began book shopping this week!  This is an opportunity during D.E.A.R time for students to pick out "just right" books in our "just right" library.  Students learned a new method to pick out books, "I PICK".  We discussed how books need to be the right fit just like shoes.  I brought in a bag of shoes and we discussed the analogy.  For example, my flip flops are for the beach (purpose), I love going to the beach (interest) and they are my size (comprehend and know the words).  I didn't bring in any soccer shoes, because I don't play soccer.  Although Kaiyan and Zoe both had the same purpose for their sneakers (going to gym, going for a walk etc.) they tried to switch shoes and they didn't fit!  We all agreed that finding a book that fits right is different for each person.

CJ tried on men's dress shoes...they definitely did not fit!

We began a chapter book read aloud this week.  Students practiced the comprehension strategy Visualizing...making a movie in your mind.

We kicked off Writer's Workshop by drawing and writing about an event in our lives.  Students were also introduced to their writing folders.

Naomi and Meghan were the first authors to sit in the Author's Chair and share their work!

For math students played games with their math buddies and learned how to find patterns for numbers broken into two parts.
